The profiles of this year New Professionals Programme bursary holders go on. This week please meet Nicola Wood, from UK.
“I am in my second and final year of studying part-time on the Archives and Records Management Masters course at University College London. Inspired by my studies, I am particularly interested in the current challenges and opportunities presented by the global creation of digital information, Linked Data, and the way different cultures approach the preservation of their collective memories.
I am also the Archives Assistant at Queen Mary University of London where I work with the University’s institutional records and personal paper collections. Our collections include fascinating papers on women in higher education and the social history of East London, from the Victorian period to present day.
I would like to attend the 2016 ICA Congress as it offers an excellent opportunity to get involved in the global community of archive and information professionals, to share experiences and hear how other cultures go about meeting the challenges presented by record keeping which we all face, including concerns relating to records management in the digital age and issues that arise whilst safeguarding and opening up access to archival heritage.
I am looking forward to working alongside the other New Professionals in creating and delivering a common session at the conference and to hearing as many speakers as possible talk about their work, sharing what I learn with colleagues back home. The conference is an invaluable opportunity to learn about achievements in the global record keeping profession, to gain new ideas and alternative perspectives, and to expand my own understanding and experiences of archives and records management, set amongst the historic traditions and modern advancements of South Korea’s archival culture.”
