Mauricio Katz/Catherine Romero: The archives of the Colombian Truth Commission: Challenges and Achievements.

Mauricio Katz and Catherine Romero will reveal how the files of the Colombian Truth Commission were archived and made available to inform the public where the files are today for consultation, investigation, and other uses as part of a first stage of individual and collective reparation in respect of the right to the truth and non-repetition inherited by the Truth Commission within the framework of the transitional justice process that Colombia is undergoing today. They will highlight the main challenges and achievements obtained when presenting the contents of the archives and their particularities. They will close with an exchange about the lessons learned from the Colombian experience.

Panelists' Profiles

Mauricio Katz, a sociologist, served as Secretary General and Settlement Agent of the Commission for Clarification, Coexistence and Non-Repetition of Colombia between May 2018 and May 2023. In compliance with these functions, he was responsible for configuring and regulating the records management of the Commission and after classifying, cataloging, and digitalizing the information until the delivery of the Documentary Fund to the owner and administrator entities respectively. Mauricio has worked for more than 25 years in territorial peace-building processes in Colombia and in public management responsibilities.

Catherine Romero, a lawyer, served as legal advisor to the president of the Commission for Clarification, Coexistence, and Non-Repetition of Colombia between May 2018 and August 2022. She oversaw designing the delivery of the Truth Commission's files under the concept of creating an Archive for Peace. In addition, during the last year, she oversaw transferring the documentary fonds to the depositary entities ( Special Jurisdiction for Peace and  National General Archives ) and formulating the protocols for access to information and drafting the international passive security copy agreement with the Swiss Confederation.
