The ICA Section for Archival Education and Training (SAE)  is excited to extend an invitation to all its members to participate in a series of four virtual workshops titled Archival Pedagogies scheduled to take place between May and June.

The second workshop entitled Community Archives Pedagogy aims to reflect on ways we teach (or can teach) about community archives. Participants will learn:

  • what are the challenges of teaching this subject;
  • how to present the local and international context of community archives;
  • how to make the complex phenomenon of community archives easier to grasp;
  • what opportunities this subject presents to the teacher and what actually we can teach through the topic of community archives.

The workshop will be based on the facilitator’s experience in teaching the subject on community archives to students at Nicolaus Copernicus University (since 2019), as well as on her research in archival pedagogy – especially her Visiting Professorship at Queens College, City University of New York, as part of a project sponsored by the Kosciuszko Foundation, which investigates teaching about community archives at Polish and American universities (March-May 2024).

This session will be facilitated by Dr. Magdalena Wiśniewska-Drewniak. Dr. Magdalena Wiśniewska-Drewniak is an assistant professor at the Department of Archival Science and Records Management, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland. Her main research interest are Polish independent community archives – the subject that also constituted her doctoral dissertation defended in 2018. She has been a PI of two National Science Center sponsored research grants focused on empirical research on Polish community archives (2016-2019 and 2023-2026). She works closely with the Center for Community Archives in Warsaw and is involved in international cooperation in the field of archival research.
