Call For Papers – Featured section in History in Africa: Archives, the Digital Turn and Governance in Africa
This featured section of History in Africa will address the wave of digitisation of archives in Africa over the last fifteen years. With the rise of information technologies, an increasing part of public – and to some extent private – African archives are being digitised and made accessible on the internet. This wave of digitisation is usually seen as a progress with the help of ambitious initiatives applying new technologies to cultural heritage of humanity such as the rescue of the manuscripts of Timbuktu or the Endangered Archives programme at the British Library. Yet as much as these new technologies raise enthusiasm, they also prompt discussions amongst researchers and archivists, which go from intellectual property to sovereignty and governance. …

Appel à communications : Dossier du Journal History in Africa Archives, virage numérique et gouvernance en Afrique
Cette section de History in Africa abordera la vague de numérisation des archives en Afrique au cours des quinze dernières années. Avec le développement des technologies de l'information, un nombre croissant d’archives africaines publiques et, dans une certaine mesure, privées, sont numérisées et rendues accessibles sur Internet. Cette vague de numérisation est généralement considérée comme un progrès soutenu par des initiatives ambitieuses qui appliquent les nouvelles technologies au champ du patrimoine culturel de l'humanité, tels que le sauvetage des manuscrits de Tombouctou ou le programme Endangered Archives de la British Library. At its 41st session to be held in Krakow, Poland, from 2 to 12 July 2017, the World Heritage Committee will examine the state of conservation of 154 World Heritage properties. Akçam Honors Rev. Krikor Guerguerian, Announces Digitalization of Guerguerian Archival Collection, at ALMA Lecture
WATERTOWN — Prof. Taner Akçam presented a lecture with slides on the legacy of the work of Rev. Krikor Guerguerian on the Armenian Genocide, and announced the digitalization of the latter’s collection, at the Armenian Museum of America (ALMA) on May 11. There was a large audience present at this talk, titled “The Story Behind the Smoking Gun.”

An Australian treasure chest: new National Archives hub opens in Canberra

More than 100 kilometres of shelf space and room for nine kilometres of audio visual records have come online at the newest home of Australia's national treasures.
The National Archives of Australia's new specialist preservation facility in Mitchell was opened on Friday by Attorney-General George Brandis, set to become home to about a quarter of the national collection alongside state-of-the-art conservation facilities, digitisation spaces and research rooms.

Les nouveaux bâtiments consacrés à la préservation des Archives Nationales d’Australie ont été inaugurés vendredi à Mitchell par l’avocat-général George Brandis, et sont appelés à abriter environ un quart des collections nationales, aux côtés d’installations de pointe consacrées à la conservation, aux espaces numériques et aux salles de lecture.

Destroy 'highly personal' residential school records, NTI says
Inuit are opposed to the federal government's position in the Supreme Court case which will decide whether to preserve or destroy "highly personal" accounts of residential school survivors.
The Government of Canada is arguing that the Federal Access and Privacy legislation mandates these records be preserved in national archives.
Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, which speaks for Inuits in Nunavut, says all Independent Assessment Process records should be destroyed, unless an individual survivor opts for theirs to be kept.

Truth and reconciliation archives opened to University of Alberta under new partnership

The inspection is aimed at ensuring the law's enforcement to improve intellectual property rights protection and promote cultural prosperity, said Wang Chen, vice chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, at a meeting on the inspection Friday.

The Circular 001 issued by the General Archive of the Nation of Colombia, on April 3rd of the present year, urges the bodies obliged to comply with the General Law of Archives to stop the destruction of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law documents, and to prioritise these archives during the record management planning, and the resulting update of these archival tools in these bodies.

Every year the world celebrates the International Archives Day on June 9th. For a library to exist, first and foremost, archives must be useful, indicated Pierre-Aimé Mobembo, curator and director in charge of training at the Institute of National Archives, during an interview with "AfricaNews ". According to him, if archives disappear, the country will have no history. The Educational Project of the Historical Archives of the EU Expands

Increased involvement of schools in the activities of the Historical Archives of the European Union, which renews its commitment to student formation and the desire to be receptive to citizens.
The Educational Project of the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) has concluded its current school year activities involving more than 1,000 students from primary, secondary and high schools. Approaching the fifth year of the HAEU’s school programme, the project will be presented in June by a poster at the First Italian Conference on Public History, in Ravenna. The HAEU school project is organised in collaboration with FMA, the Former Member Association of the European Parliament and has expanded in 2016 through the “A New Treaty for Europe” competition which concluded with an awards ceremony with participation of the President of the Italian Senate, Mr Pietro Grasso, at Villa Salviati on 4 May 2017.

Le projet pédagogique des Archives historiques de l’Union Européenne prend de l’ampleur
Participation accrue des écoles dans les activités des Archives historiques de l’Union Européenne, qui renouvelle son engagement envers la formation d’étudiants et son désir d’être à l’écoute des citoyens. Les activités du Projet Pédagogique des Archives historiques de l’Union Européenne (HAEU) sont terminées pour cette année - plus de 1000 élèves d’écoles primaires, secondaires et lycées y ont participé. A l’aube des cinq ans du programme éducatif des HAEU, le projet sera présenté sur poster en juin lors de la First Italian Conference on Public History, à Ravenne. Le projet pédagogique des HAEU est organisé en partenariat avec la FMA, l’Association des anciens députés au Parlement européen. Il a pris de l’ampleur en 2016 grâce au concours « Un nouveau traité pour l’Europe », qui s’est achevé avec une cérémonie de remise de prix à la Villa Salviati le 4 mai 2017, à laquelle a participé le Président du Sénat italien, Mr Pietro Grasso.

2017-2020, second cultural and educational scientific project of the national archives
Three years after the opening of Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, which also went through a profound modernisation, the National Archives continues to implement their regulatory missions in a second quadrennial programme: the Cultural and Educational Scientific Project ( PSCE).
The challenge for the next four years will be to give a new boost to the National Archives, which will be located, by the end of this period, at both sites in Paris and Pierrefitte following the decision taken by the Minister of Culture on 28 June 2016, to close the site of Fontainebleau at the end of this period.

Trois ans après l'ouverture de Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, qui s'est accompagné d'une profonde modernisation, les Archives nationales poursuivent la déclinaison de leurs missions réglementaires dans un deuxième programme d'action quadriennal : le Projet scientifique culturel et éducatif (PSCE).
L'enjeu durant ces quatre prochaines années sera de donner une nouvelle impulsion aux Archives nationales qui, au terme de ce délai, seront localisées sur les deux sites de Paris et de Pierrefitte, suite à la décision prise par la ministre de la Culture le 28 juin 2016, de fermer au terme de ce délai, le site de Fontainebleau.

277 images of prewar life in Okinawa found in Asahi archives

A small and grimy cardboard box in storage at The Asahi Shimbun's Osaka head office that had remained unopened for decades turned out to contain a treasure trove of photographic images of prewar life in Okinawa Prefecture.
The 277 negatives, taken in 1935 by a photographer of what was then The Osaka Asahi Shimbun, were hailed by researchers as an extremely valuable resource as much of Okinawa's photographic record was lost in the Battle of Okinawa that raged in the final stage of the Pacific War in 1945.
The images show market, fishing and farming scenes as well as other aspects of everyday life in the southernmost prefecture.

Une petite boîte en carton toute sale, entreposée au siège social d’Asahi Shimbun à Osaka, et restée fermée pendant plusieurs décennies renfermait un trésor composé de photographies de la vie avant la guerre à la Préfecture d’Okinawa. Les 277 négatifs, pris en 1935 par le photographe de ce qui était alors l’Osaka Asahi Shimbun, ont été acclamés par les chercheurs, étant une ressource extrêmement précieuse dans la mesure où les archives photographiques d’Okinawa ont été perdues lors de la Bataille d’Okinawa qui a fait rage à la fin de la Guerre du Pacifique en 1945. Les images montrent des scènes de vie au marché, à la pêche et à la ferme ainsi que d’autres aspects de la vie quotidienne de la préfecture la plus méridionale du pays.

Suspension of physical transfers to Archives New Zealand's Wellington repository

Archives New Zealand advises that it has suspended the transfer of physical records to its Wellington repository at Mulgrave Street until 1 December 2017.
Why is this happening?
A programme of remedial work will be undertaken to repair and replace damaged shelving in the repository following the Kaikōura earthquake. This will ensure we continue to meet our Health and Safety obligations and to put in place some interim storage solutions.
The storage space currently available is needed to allow us to move archives away from areas of remedial work to ensure appropriate archival care. This means some areas of the repository may be temporarily unavailable while this work is undertaken.

Interruption des transferts physiques des Archives de Nouvelle-Zélande dans les bâtiments de Wellington
Les Archives de Nouvelle-Zélande indiquent interrompre jusqu’au 1er décembre 2017 le transfert des documents physiques dans les bâtiments de Wellington sur Mulgrave Street.
Quelle en est la raison ?
Des travaux de réparation vont être entrepris pour réparer et remplacer les rayonnages endommagés lors du tremblement de terre de Kaikōura. Cela va nous permettre de respecter les obligations de santé et de sécurité, et de mettre en place des solutions de stockage temporaires.
L’espace de stockage actuellement disponible est nécessaire afin de pouvoir déplacer les archives loin des zones de travaux, et garantir ainsi une prise en charge archivistique appropriée. Cela signifie que certaines zones du bâtiment seront temporairement indisponibles pendant les travaux.

Norway library to digitise Nigerian literature

Oslo — The National Library of Norway said on Monday it would digitise literature from Nigeria following a seemingly unprecedented agreement which organisers hope will lead to an "African digital library".
In the northern Norwegian town of Mo i Rana, at the rim of the Arctic Circle, the National Library of Norway plans to digitise part of its Nigerian counterpart’s collection.

The National Archives celebrates 200 years

The National Archives opens the doors to everyone and invites birthday celebration when the archive reaches 200 years.
With sausages and ice and dives into the archive’s rooms, anyone can get an impression from the nation’s memory bank.
The actual word archive may seem dusty, dry and boring, but the fact is that the National Archives had 1.6 million unique users of its digital services last year.
That’s almost a third of the population, says an enthusiastic director Inga Bolstad before the anniversary.
Very many of the users are searching the databases over and over again. In particular, many are concerned with genealogy and searches in church books and censuses. Others are more concerned with the war archives, which are also very much in demand.

Les Archives nationales ont ouvert leurs portes à tous, et vous invitent à fêter leur 200ème anniversaire.
Saucisses, glace et plongées dans les salles d’archives permettent à tout un chacun de se faire une idée sur la mémoire de la nation.
Le mot archives peut paraître poussiéreux, sec et ennuyeux, mais le fait est que les Archives nationales ont vu 1.6 million de lecteurs uniques utiliser leurs services numériques l’an passé.
C’est presque un tiers de la population, a déclaré leur directrice enthousiaste Inga Bolstad, juste avant la commémoration.
De nombreux utilisateurs font maintes recherches dans les bases de données. Beaucoup s’intéressent en particulier à la généalogie, et font des recherches dans les registres paroissiaux et les recensements. D’autres sont plus intéressés par les archives relatives à la guerre, qui sont également très consultées.

In 2015, Berlin-based researcher Nicolas Sheikholeslami compiled Au Revoir Mogadishu Vol 1, a mixtape of Somali music from before the 1988 civil war. Beguiled by this authentic sound, Sheikholeslami and Ostinato Records boss Vik Sohonie travelled to the Horn of Africa to unearth an archive of more than 10 000 cassettes and reels preserved through the war by resolute radio operators and dedicated gatekeepers of Somali culture.

'Lost' early photographs shed light on Sudan's Nuba and Latuka tribes

In 1948 and 1949 erstwhile war photographer George Rodger ventured into southern Sudan as the first Westerner officially permitted to photograph the peoples of the Nuba mountains. While Rodger’s black and white images gained fame -- and inspired filmmaker and one-time Nazi propaganda maker Leni Riefenstahl to visit in the 1960s and 70s -- his color photographs, shot on a Leica with Kodachrome film, remained unpublished until now.

Exploring precious archive record at Stornoway conference
Throughout the Western Isles, local history societies are thriving, so nowhere is more appropriate than Stornoway to host an event showcasing innovative community archive projects from across Scotland. The conference on June 14 and 15 took place in the historic Lews Castle, recently restored and home to Scotland’s first Gaelic-led museum and Tasglann nan Eilean (Hebridean Archive). Lucy Casot, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Scotland, said: “The Heritage Lottery Fund is delighted to support a conference that brings together so many excellent examples of communities engaging directly with their heritage. “The conference also showcases the impact of HLF investment in places and people – both Lews Castle and the achievements of Skills for the Future programme. The conference marks the culmination of the three-year, Scottish Council on Archives’ Opening Up Scotland’s Archives project.

In a session titled “Playtime with Archive” on Saturday (June 10) at Sheffield Doc/Fest, a panel of filmmakers who remix, reinterpret and play with archive film shared how they source archive material, manage rights issues, and discussed the reasons behind the different approaches taken to working with archive footage.

De-classified: Nuclear Test Footage and Our Dangerous Past

From 1945 to 1962 the American government detonated more than 210 nuclear bombs while cameras captured each test explosion at nearly 2,400 frames per second.Since the legislative halt of atmospheric testing in 1963, 6,500 out of an estimated 10,000 films have been located with 4,200 scanned and now 750 declassified. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California set the project in motion in hopes of extracting all lost data that nuclear weapons physicists will use to analyze the magnitude of past and possible future atomic damage. The project launched out of necessity, has led to the best possible restoration of Cold War bomb footage that the Livermore National Laboratory has now made public on YouTube.

De 1945 à 1962, le gouvernement américain a fait exploser plus de 210 bombes nucléaires et ses caméras ont capturé chaque explosion à près de 2400 images par seconde. Depuis la « halte législative » des essais atmosphériques en 1963, 6500 films sur 10 000 estimés ont été localisés, 4 200 scannés et maintenant 750 déclassifiés. Why printers add secret dots
On 3 June, FBI agents arrived at the house of government contractor Reality Leigh Winner in Augusta, Georgia. They had spent the last two days investigating a top secret classified document that had allegedly been leaked to the press. At that point, experts began taking a closer look at the document, now publicly available on the web. They discovered something else of interest: yellow dots in a roughly rectangular pattern repeated throughout the page. They were barely visible to the naked eye, but formed a coded design. After some quick analysis, they seemed to reveal the exact date and time that the pages in question were printed: 06:20 on 9 May, 2017 – at least, this is likely to be the time on the printer’s internal clock at that moment. The dots also encode a serial number for the printer.
These “microdots” are well known to security researchers and civil liberties campaigners. Many colour printers add them to documents without people ever knowing they’re there.

Les points encodent également un numéro de série pour l’imprimante.
Ces « micropoints » sont bien connus des experts en sécurité et des militants des libertés civiques. De nombreses imprimantes couleurs les ajoutent aux documents sans que l’on s’en doute.

Videotapes Are Becoming Unwatchable As Archivists Work To Save Them
Mary Kidd pops a VHS tape in the deck and rewinds. Two kids appear on the screen, dancing to music and laughing.
Kidd and her colleagues meet in this loft in Tribeca in New York City every Monday to digitize tapes like this one. The loft has racks of tape decks, oscilloscopes, vector scopes and wave-form monitors that help ensure a quality transfer from analog to digital.
Kidd and the others are archivists and preservationists, and they're part of a group called XFR Collective (pronounced Transfer Collective). Most work professionally, but they volunteer their free time to do this. And while the mood is light, there is a sense of a deadline.
